Iron Man 3’s Shane Black reveals that the Christmas setting wasn’t his idea

Marvel Studios has been busy promoting hook, the first show on Disney+ set during the holiday season. Furthermore, House of Ideas has released a Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special Earlier this month, he created the perfect two-punch punch for Marvel fans looking to get in on the seasonal action. Long before either of those projects were ever released, the Marvel Cinematic Universe had its first Christmas movie Iron Man 3.

The movie takes place at the height of the season as people finish their Christmas shopping and spread the holiday cheer. Such as Iron Man 3 Making it a Christmas movie wasn’t his idea, Helmer Shane Black recalls, but he was totally on board. In fact, he only acquiesced after Drew Pierce pressured him to build it around the season.

“I didn’t want Christmas to feel like a gimmick, something to be expected, or a braggart on my part. It started out as fun, and once people noticed it, it stopped being fun. But I acquiesced largely because of the Christmas carol side of it. Tony is losing his support, he’s losing his base, he’s lost in the middle of America,” Black said in a new conversation with empire.

“And he won’t be visited by ghosts, but he will certainly be in the middle of a process of reckoning, or reconciliation, where he has to make an assessment, figure out what’s bothering him, and how he’s going to move on. It worked out in the end.” The coda is basically him at Christmas, giving a gift to his fiancée, giving a gift to a little boy who helped him. And there’s a Christmas miracle when Jon Favreau’s character comes out of a coma. There’s just something about that, where you can get as dark and dark and dark, as cruel as you want. Then you call in a little Christmas, and it gives you the cheer you’re looking for.”

And speaking of Pierce, ComicBook.com’s Chris Killian spoke with the actor earlier this year. As of September, the actor was still hoping to return to the MCU in some form, way, or form.

“No, I really haven’t,” Pearce said at the time. Um, I think I just wrote off the idea because of what happened to Aldrich Killian at the end Iron Man 3 But at the same time, in these worlds, anything is possible, and yet I never got a call from anyone at Marvel. So I’m not sure if this is in the works, but who knows.”
